  • Will my potatoes go rotten?

    Hello everyone...

I've planted some well-chitted Salad Blue potatoes in barrels outside
    only 4 days ago.

I'm worried about the rain today - there's been shed-loads here
in Wiltshire. At this stage, is there any risk of the potatoes going
rotten or is this something not to worry about?

    Regards
    Crosbie

Welcome to the Vine Crosbie. If you've got drainage holes in the bottom of your barrels your potatoes will be fine. It'll take more than a drop of rain to stop a good potato.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Strangely enough my Salad Blues and Sarpo Unos went in 5 days ago - in flower buckets!

Don't think wet is to worry about so long as drainage in place - it's still danger of frost where your area might still be at risk.

Think I'm OK down south but not sure where exactly you are - check local weather and cover with fleece as necessary - also round base of bucket/pot if using.

Quite frankly I'm quite relieved that I ordered my seeds after Jan (but missed out on specialialities) as others here have expressed concerns over exposure to frost etc. Mine have been chitting in an unheated sun lounge - since Feb - and whilst they may be a little behind - hopefully will not be subject to frost damage.

Weather is matching up to expected few days OK-ish followed by day/s of rain - which might help watering?!

      Normal British summer of old?

Thank you Alice and Quark1 for your comments...

I'm trying to articulate how to respond to replies; I'm not sure if - by the time one is logged on - a thread has already been pushed to the bottom or over the page, in which case there is no continuum.

If you do get to read this messge, just to say, I'd be very interested to hear about the progress of your Salad Blue potatoes - I've got a barrel of them indoors in addition to the outside barrel - haulms are growing about 1" per day - and I'd be really interested to hear about the progress of your blue spuds.

        Thanks again,

        Regards
        Crosbie
