  • Off to buy my buckets!!! :)

Just got to think how many I need now. Going to plant some with leeks and carrots (but haven't quite worked out how to blanch the leeks if I do that), some with the onions in (although if the onions will do the same job as the leeks I'll put those in with the carrots). Need some for my bushy tomatoes, some for beetroot ummmm...can't think what else

10 and a bag of compost will do me I think!

Far too many plants and not enough space

Morrisons are selling eight good sized tubs for 99p again, that could save you some money if there's a branch near you.

You could put some potatoes in the buckets too, Gryfon.

Managed to get the B&Q ones for 88p each

Did think about that but have potatoes in bin sacks at the moment!

Your being diddled. I got 16 buckets in my pack at Darlington Morrisons although the sticky tape says 8. Think I'm the only person buying as last time I got 12. Bet I only get 8 next time as its catching on I see.

I go to asda and get 10" plastic pots for free, they throw them away from the flower shop in the foyer.

What a great idea, planting carrots and leeks in buckets and pots. Does there have to be a minimum depth, only we get tubs of fat-balls for the birds, and I always try re-using pots/tubs, etc., wherever possible. And also what compost/soil do you reccommend in these buckets/tubs?
                God bless,

                  Veg in tubs

If they are not deep enough you can always cut the bottom off one & stand it on top of another one Mirita.

If they are about the size of a florists black bucket the are ore than big enough depending what sort of veg you grow in them. You will probably only get 1 leek in each one as they need a bit of room to spread their roots. I'd plant 1 spud per tub aswell as they are greedy feeders. Carrots - go for something like Amsterdam Forcing as they are quick to mature & pull them when they are about finger sized (or a bit bigger.)

As to compost - I tend to used John Innes No2 or 3 as it's a bit more forgiving than the peat type multi-purpose composts and it easier to water.

Remember though that the feed in the compost willonly last around 4 weeks before you need to start feeding.

                    free tubs

Tesco also give away their flower buckets - I asked last week and a very obliging young man brought me 22 from the back!

I went to one of our local florist's and she was happy to get rid of the spare buckets that were clogging up her back yard. Got about 20 that are now full. Planted some supermarket spuds in a couple to see how they will get on. Flowered already so anytime now we could be trying bucket spuds. Even trying Squashes in them.Try your local florist's

Think I will ask at Tesco tonight, do you need to put drainage holes in?

For anyone in Lancashire, I got some flower buckets for 10p each at the Booths store in Kirby Lonsdale as I was visiting at the weekend. Guess the other stores are doing the same? dexterdog
