I have just got stupidly excited over mushrooms! I recently got into gardening and have planted loads of container veg. Only problem is non of it is ready until next year. I wanted something i could have some quick sucess with so i grew some mushrooms. Feel like i can grow veg now! Have just eaten 14 yummy mushrooms freshly picked. They taste much better than shop ones as well. Would recommend growing mushrooms, you cant go wrong. Catriona.

      Mushrooms!!

I'm the same as you Catriona. I only started gardening and growing veggies last August. Just bought my first house (with quite a big garden!!! ) and got myself an allotment too!! I've already started by planting a few things: winter lettuce, onions, garlic, etc but as you said it will take time. So I bought some button mushroom grain spawn and some oyster mushroom wooden plugs to get something a bit quicker... The oyster mushrooms will take 6 to 10 months to grown and for the button ones I am composting some straw so I can add the grain spawn to it...

What sort of mushrooms are you growing? And how did you do it?

I can't wait to get my mushrooms!!! Yum yum!!

I bought a kit at the garden center. They are just normal button mushrooms and all you had to do is put the spore stuff on the bottom of the box, pour the peat over it and water. I think its important not to let them dry out. I got about 10 mushrooms out of the first batch and the box assures me that more will come up. The kit was about 5 or 8 pounds, cant remember and i would say its expensive for what you get, but fun. Acorn where did you get the spore stuff from? I bet its much cheeper than a kit. I would prefer to do that and use straw as i dont like using the peat that comes with the kits.

Suttons seeds sell the spore for button mushrooms. You just need some compost. It's not expensive £2.95 or £3.95 for the big size. www.suttons-seeds.co.uk

              Mushrooms

I got them from dobies (www.dobies.co.uk) and I think I must have paid about £3 (can't remember!). Good luck!
