I've got a stretch of ground, near a wall that's sandy and gravelly. Are there any plants that will cope with those conditions?

Alpines may do well there or drought resistant plants such as Rosemary and some of the herbs from warmer areas.
If there is a good depth of soil and your water table is moderate you could try a fruit tree - you would need to water well for the first few summers. The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!
