I have a strip of ground thats both gritty and sandy, would sprouts be ok there, don't want to give over a bed to the brussels.

My instinctive answer would be 'no', they probably wouldn't be very happy there - brassicas nearly all like to be in firm soil, moist & fairly compacted round their roots - they quite like clay soil!

      Hi

Sorry to disagree; but we have grown Sprouts and Calabrese in gritty sandy soil before and they gave us loads of produce. We had to take up 'crazy paving' to do so and it worked a treat. Gave us a hugh bed when everything else we grew had to be in pots.

As long as you pop some decent compost in the bottom of the hole, firm the plants in well - really well, and give them a good feed regularly; they should be fine.

Give it a go and see what happens. If they're fed they'll be OK for nutrients. If the soil is loose sand they may struggle, they do like to be firmly rooted.

I'm going to give it a go, the soil is very firm there, nothing ventured nothing gained.
