I am new to growing veg, advice please

Hi,

I am very new to all of this so could do with some advice please

Last weekend I bought a small plastic type greenhouse and in trays I have planted pepper, tomatoe & cucumber seeds. What would be the best feed for these and how often should I be feeding them? should i keep the door open during the daytime? What happens once they start growing do I need to transfer them into bigger tubs? See I told you I was new to this

I have also dug out a part of the garden and planted carrot, swede & spring onion seeds. How often should I feed them and what with? Do I have to move them once they start growing or just leave them be?

Do you spray your crops or go totally organic?

First of all welcome to the exciting world of veg growing

I would advise getting a simple book to tell you the basics (I use Joy Larkam's Grow your own veg) - but of course this place is very helpful as well.
I also have found Your fruit, herb and vegetable garden very helpful and easy to understand

I'm no expert on greenhouse gardening as I don't have one, but on your other points:

You don't need to worry about feeding things when they are still seedlings - and for a lot of things feeding even when in the main growing and fruiting stage is not necessary as long as you prepared your soil well when planting.

There are exceptions of course and some crops do benefit from feeding - notably tomatoes, squashes/courgettes/cucumbers etc, and sweetcorn. Toms benefit from a a feed high in potash (buy a feed labelled 'tomato feed'!), others do fine with general compost (bought or home made).

With repsct to moving things - there are a whole variety of techniques, but some things do not like being moved- particularly root veg (carrots, parsnip beetroot etc). I would just thin out you carrot, swede and sping onion once they have sprouted.

Finally, personally I don't spray with any insecticide or such like, and I get the impression most people on here are similar - although of course there is a whole variety of techniques for keeping the nasties at bay. If you have planted your onions next to your carrots then that is good as onions dter the main carrot pest - carrot fly

On moving toms, you may need to move (pot on) you seedlings to a bigger pot depending on size, but should be planted into their final position when about 6 inches high
