  • Don't plant out till May is out?

Always adhered to this, but with the weather changes do you think it is still applicable?

Could do with making a bit of room in the greenhouse, courgettes are slowly but surely taking over

Anyone tempted with this glorious weather, or are you all hanging on?

I have everything outside but nothing planted in the ground yet, all still in pots/modules. I tend to only plant into my beds when things are big enough (hopefully) not to be eaten by gremlins! Plus if we do have a chilly night I can whip the tenderest things into the g/house.
Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!
Always aim for the best result possible not the best possible result

I'll be planting the first few tender things this weekend - one courgette, a few tomatoes...

I have cloches and fleece to hand in case of cold.

Other stuff (sweetcorn, more tomatoes) will stay in the greenhouse at night for a couple more weeks.

In that little saying/proverb, the "May" bit applies to the blossom of the Hawthorn - May Blossom, rather than the month. So I usually wait til I see May blossom before planting out tender stuff. Last year it was much earlier than usual, but it was right - there was no frost after it started flowering

I haven't seen a Hawthorn near me so can't see when blossom is out. As you are further North than me, is it out where you are yet?

The May is in full bloom here! I haven't planted much out yet but everything is out all the time now just waiting the ground to be put ready to plant them into.

All these years, and I have been doing it all wrong-I didn't know that

Now then where to find some Hawthorn bushes

I wonder whether that is the same for the old saying "Ner cast a clout til may is out" ?
Sounds feasible not to take your umpah umpah off until the may is in blossom!

Indeed it is the same May reference Snadger. I always wondered why mum used to make us wear a vest one day and then not the next - even if the second day seemed colder than the first. It was a case of the Hawthorn flowers appearing and vests no longer needed!
