  • Bite The Bullet!!

I started my sweetcorn in my greenhouse quite early, (early march I think) and I've planted them out today on my allotment after hardening off in my cold frame. I've had one or two negative comments about getting them out so early because the old boys tell my they'll die at any sign of frost. The thing is that they're about 10-12" tall and were fast outgrowing their pots, so I didn't have much choice anyway. I wondered if anyone else has their sweetcorn out yet, or am I (as suggested by the old sages) tempting fate?

Mine went out last weekend and are doing fine.

I have another batch that are going out this weekend.

I've got everything out, it's been heat not frost that's been the problem!

We're having a heatwave now, with well above-average temperatures. It could all change next week!
We could go back to cold, wet, windy weather and your sweetcorn will suffer. I'm hanging on till end of the month to put mine out ... but best of luck with yours, let us know how they work out.

I think I'll probably sew another batch as a 'back-up' just in case Mr. Frost makes an unexpected appearance...I'll keep you posted on the progress of the first lot.
