greenfly on lettuce

  • greenfly on lettuce

    i have a line of lettuce starting to grow nicely and was real pleased but i noticed this morning some tiny green bugs on back of leaves which i think are greenfly,just guessing but they are green.how should i treat them and i dont mean should i be polite its only a dozen lettuce but afraid of them spreading.
    never be afraid to ask because a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

    I find finger and thumb work best ;-)

      Yes, squish them with fingers before they spread too much (they're born pregnant you know).
      When you cut your lettuce, give it a soak in salty water to get rid of bodies before you eat it.
      As a prevention: grow some Limnanthes or similar to attract aphid-eaters like hoverflies and ladybirds.

        i grow a climbing rose just for that purpose.the green fly swamp it and leave evrything else alone x
