  • Leeks in Pots

I followed the advice in an earlier thread and sowed my leeks in small pots. They have all come up splendidly, but not too sure what to do now? They are soon going to overcrowd the pot, and already roots are forming at the bottom. They are still very thin looking, so can't go into the ground yet.

    Any ideas? thanks.

I did the same with my salad onions and I have planted these in the ground now by splitting the pot into three. They looked a little sad at first, but are picking up now. I will have to start thinning them soon. Didn't want to try it with the leeks and lose them.

I put my leeks into kitchen roll holders, not toilet rolls as the kitchen roll is deeper. They are still in the greenhouse waiting to be planted out. This is my first time growing them so not sure what i'm doing.

You need to thin them and let them grow a bit, then when they're a bit sturdier add some ground into the pot and build up around them as they grow.

Thanks Gryfon - had a go at thinning one pot today and thought perhaps I had better plant it in something bigger. I just HATE thinning - I know it is good for the eventual harvest, but it seems so wasteful.
