They're outside Jo,Jo. I'm sure I read somewhere about building them a "ladder" type support but wasn't really sure what its supposed to look like

try a bit wood say aprox,3 or 4 cm square, allow say 5foot above ground, attach cross pieces aprox,8in,with 12in intervals,{the idea is it helps to stop the plants main stem from sagging to much,so not to interupt the water take up of the plant}let the plant gently twirl the support tying in as you go,this year i am going to make a ranch fence type frame,1 upright for each plant with 3 to 5 cross bits,am also going to experiment and try some squashes this way,but using stronger wood,my son tryed it last year,i thought what a good idea,it looked like a goal post only smaller,he grew some bigger than the vegetable spaghetti without any support for the squash it'self,it really did save on the ground space, some people just let them roam the ground.

              Hi all

Will a wigwam do like beans climb , or is there an advantage too more of a trellis type support?

This is my first time growing cucs, I made a tripod, planted the cuc in the middle then spiralled twine round the ouitside of the tripod. Does that sound ok?

I like the ladder idea. In fact, we have got quite a few step ladders that got damaged during house build and we were going to throw them away, but having red all that, I think I will paint them and stick them in the garden, to use with my cucumbers and climbing melons/pumpkins

I use trellis in my greenhouse for cucumbers. You need something a big sturdier than a cane.

I've just planted my 'Burpless' cucumber seedlings outside. Never grown them before, and the label from the garden centre didn't mention anything about supports. Looks like I'll have to rig something up pronto!

You could just try positive encouragement. Something like "come on you cucumbers!"

Sorry, it's my humourettes syndrome at work again.

I use expanding trellis tied to canes stuck in the ground or pot.
