  • Garlic flowers

    Hello,

Can I ask a quick question.

Once again the weather is playing with us.

Has anyone got problems with their garlic.

Ours has been growing lovely but now most of them have sent up flowers.
Does anyone know, do I cut the stem from the bottom or just take the flower off the top.

Also, why is it doing it? I prepared the soil.

Thanks if you can help. You can't beat fresh Garlic.
    thanks

If you want mega-bulbs take the flowers off, but some varieties will flower anyway. Some garlic is hard-necked (planted autumn), the others soft necked (can be planted spring) and hard-necked will always flower. Cut off the flower just below the actual flower part - although the bulbs formed here can be used to grow more garlic!

The flowers are a delicacy called Scape. See the recipe below, found on the internet.

Steam or Stir Fry Garlic Flowers
The garlic tops, called flowers or garlic scapes, are a gourmet delight! Steam them whole and serve with melted butter like asparagus. Cut them into short lengths to add to a stir fry. They have a delicate garlic flavour which gives a subtly different and delicious flavour to the sauce.
