  • what is eating my veg?!

    Hi everyone.
    I need some advice.
Something is eating my cabbages, brussells and calabrese. These plants were bought ready to plant out and have been in for a while. Leaves large and small have been shredded and there are discarded bits lying around. Damage is irregular. No evidence of snail/slug trails. Only other evidence is quite a few sizeable bird poos! There are lots of pigeons about as we're close to farmland. Other veg including runners, french and broad beans untouched. Any ideas gratefully received.

We have to net or cage all our brassicas from pigeons, both in the garden and in the allotments (about 100 yds away so no surprise really.) However, if you make some reasonably strong cages with wire netting and wood, they last years.
Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Pigeons and doves! They love brassicas and will eat them through the gaps in net if they can get close enough (at least they do in my back garden!)
A bad days fishing is still better than a good day at work!
There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

Definitely the pigeons. Either net your crops or put canes and string in to create barriers so the darling little birdies can't get to your crops.
