I was thinking of making a home made slug trap but I only have lager at home. Do I need to buy them their own special bottle of beer or will the lager tempt them?

Apparently they like it - I am sure they wont be fussy! I had always toyed with the idea of a larger trap as it were but hubbie wont be tempted to part with even a drop of his beloved!Tammy x x x x

I bought supermarket value lager for pence. Think it would give any normal person gut-rot but am hoping the slugs go wild for it! Just got to dig the hole for the trap now but the ground was too hard.

Can you just use plant pot bases as the traps and leave them lying on the surface rather than burying?Cheers

i dont think they would drown well in a shallow dish! my slug traps *homemade from ice cream tubs" even trap snails!!!! obviously it is the John Smiths that they are having.
I buy a bottle of beer once a week and it certainly does the job! then i empty once a week as well, i have totally intact plants, not one lettuce has been chewed at all!!! so they must be working. I just tip it away on the fields at the back of my house, but if not i am not sure how to dispose of them.
But, if you leave them for the birds, wont they be flying upside down and side to side, because the slugs/snails will be drunk!!!!

Come on be fair, If the slug has to drown in it shouldn't it at least have a decent beer. Lager
. How can anyone drink the stuff? When I first started visiting the pub a chap only bought lager if it was for his girl friend, no self respecting bloke would touch the stuff.
Buy proper English beer, even if it is only for the slugs. You want to drown them not poison them.

I use yoghurt pots, they climb in have a good time and meet their demise and i empty them into the fields behind my house, no munching on my plants yet ( famous last words)!!Life isnt about surviving the storm.....But learning to dance in the rain.Comment

I think it's the yeast they like. I have read you can also mix yeast and water. So I think lager is fine as it is yeasty isn't it?Comment

We are both tee total so we have to resort to organic slug pelets which work great.Comment
