Thinning out Beetroot, Carrots and possibly Spring Onions

Hi

I have today checked on my plants and I have quite a lot of shoots coming up from my Beetroot, Carrots and spring onions. I know from my book that you should thin out the beetroot and Carrots but can anyone let me know at what size they should be so i don't kill them off.

Also my book advises not to thin out Spring onions but they are extremelly close together will they be ok?

I never thin any of those; I use the smaller ones as they grow and they push each other apart anyway. In fact, after PW's guidance on here, I sow all my onions and carrots in pinches and leave well alone until ready to eat. Pull the smallest at each station to eat, sow little and often and you can get year round harvests of all 3.

Sometimes, for photography purposes, I'll grow 3 onions from seed together, and then photograph them as they are about an inch in diameter; all pushing each other apart - it looks very effective!

Where are they growing? In open ground or in pots/seedtrays/celltrays?

You will find that with experience the art is in not sowing to thickly so that there is only the minimum amount of thining and that this can be done when the thinnings are of a suitable proportion to actually use. However after years of practice I still over sow.
