  • shooting garlic

I have over wintering garlic planted and it was coming on nicely until until
on the 15/05/08 the 30 plantes all went to seed. Before that date we had very hot weather fore about 8 days 25c and now the temp is down to 14c.
Any one have any idea if it was just the weather or something else

Probably just frightened...how would you like to be shot?

Bolting garlic...erm, usually irregular watering or change in the weather as you said, not much you can do really. Just cut off the flower heads to divert its energy back to bulb production otherwise you'll have small bulbs. Makes them difficult to plait and some say they don't store as well but I don't really believe that.

My over-wintered onions have started bolting too. I'm picking them as big spring onions ... I'm eating some now

Same here; I just use them first. Just take the seed head off as soon as I see it. Popit on the carrot bed to determine carrot fly.

Both garlic and shallots have bolted. Garlic should be alright but shallots won't keep. Garlic is doing really well and bulbs are starting to fill out will just need to make sure they are well dry before plaiting.
