I sowed mine into the ground and they will be grown as a winter crop here. I had a good germination rate and have a 3.5 metre row standing about 4cm high.

I'd collected 40 loo roll tubes so set 4 or 5 seeds in each roll and after 5 weeks all there's to show is 6 plants about a inch high.
Had a bit of a poke around in the compost and the remaining seeds aren't doing anything so I bought new seed at the beginning of the week and started again.
      Location....East Midlands.

I started off about 20 seeds in modules in the unheated greenhouse in march. Chose the 10 best and popped them in the ground when they were big enough...going great guns now! Sowed some seed of a different variety direct at the end of april and they are popping out now. Methinks I will also have forked roots as we have pretty heavy clay soil here...no matter how much digging and compost its still clumpy! At least it doesn't dry out mega fast though!

I've tried various methods of propogating seeds without much success.

This year, one of the guys on the allotment gave me some of his saved-seeds from parsnips he has been growing for years on the land there, he lets a few run to seed.

I put them straight in to the ground and had fantastic results with a really nice healthy row of parsnips growing very, very nicely.

Interesting, the good row is next to a row of branded seeds that were planted that did not germinate at all.

So, lesson learned and enough parsnips to last the winter (yummy!) plus one or two to let go to seed!!!!

As my first lot didn't come up, would I be ok to try again in the soil direct in about 2-3 weeks time? (When I pull the PSB I should have a small space I can make a row).

Or am I resigned to the shops this winter?

I started a few off in the greenhouse in pots as a trial and they are now in ground and doing well. Also planted some in a trough outside and so far they appear to be ok too.

                  Sadists !
Three different attempts, not one parsnip.
Everything else is doing fine, though.
Sent from my pc cos I don't have an i-phone.

My parsnips are doing fine. They took about a month to germinate - just planted outside - but they're satanding there with little parsnip leaves on.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Parsnips in toilet roll centres growing well in the ground --no problem

I think i need to rename myself "lady Parsnip"..

10 days to germinate in a pot on the window sill, 100 % germination and been outside ages and growing just fine .

I am chuffed to bits with them so far.

                        my parsnips.

They look great Wren [or should I call you Lady Parsnip].

I decided to put the rest of the packet in kitchen roll to germinate and pop the ones that do straight onto the lottie and leave them be.

Sown mine in an old green bath a few months ago as a direct sowing with a B&Q propogator lid. Great sucess all have come through and are growing very well.

But do have a confession to make......................

Last year did a direct sowing into raised bed, nothing happened.

A few weeks ago sorting out the said raised bed and saw this big leafy thing, didnt recognise it as something that I had grown. Dug it up to make room for runner beans.

One very large parsnip.......... I couldn't believe it after we had been through the winter and nothing had come through. We had it with Sunday roast, lovely.

Now I know what they look like
