  • Broccoli bolting, why ?

    Hiya all,
can anyone shed a light as to why 3 of my very healthy broccoli plants are bolting ???. They are very tall and have a lovely yellow flower.
    Thanks Minty

    Tis the weather

Your plants are in shock and trying to seed themselves in case they die soon!

cut off the flowers and keep them well watered.
    That might help?????

      Mine are the same.

The chooks got the ones with lots of flowers, I'm trying to salvage the others by removing the flowers and cropping the shoots as soon as they look big enough.

If you harvest the shoots regularily they shouldn't flower! If the plants themselves are immature and sending up shoots it's probably because they have had a shock to the system in some way, frost, too dry,too wet, potbound, pest attacks, planted too early, too late etc etc!

Are they old plants from the winter? If so, they are just finished ~ compost them.

Are they new summer plants? If so, I think the hot then cold weather shocked them into bolting... a couple of mine have done it too.

Hi, thanks guys. They are the summer calabrese type.
I have removed the main flowering shoot in hope the side shoots produce something.
            Thanks for the help, Minty
