Welcome to the vine !
If you choose the early maturing tomato, it should be still ok to direct sow them now. There should be wide varieties available such as : 42 days, pipo, early girl, new yorker, etc or go for the dwarf one such as: red robin, tiny tim, balconi red/yellow (F1), hamhs gelbe topftomate, etc
You can always buy the small tomato plant from the garden centre too .
Good luck with it !
I would never sow tomatoes direct. Start them off in pots. I have some on the windowsill that I sowed last week - they're 3 inches high already. I'm also going to buy some different plants from eBay for variety.
I have some seeds from last year which are Tamina, Gartenperle it says good for hanging baskets on the packet and Garden Delight which I grew last year and were fine but planted the seeds in April.
I will try some in pot on the windowsill to get them started.
