  • I'm just going to buy some pots for my Peppers

    Hello All,

I'm ready to pot-on my pepper plants (various varieties...lange rode, mixed co loured, and mini mixed) and I'm unsure what size pots to use.

I only have small pots that I grow my seedlings on in, so I need to buy some.

I'm gonna go to Wilko's as they are pretty cheap for gardening stuff, but I'm not sure what is the best size to buy.

Would something with a 3ltr capacity be O.K? or should I look for something bigger?

    Thanks for any advice.

I usually grow my peppers, chillies, cucumbers and tomatoes in the 10litre black flower buckets that you can buy from Morrisons (they sell them in bundles of 8 for 99p) you need to drill holes in the bottom but they work out much cheaper than other pots.

How big are your plants, and what size pots are they in at the moment? They will do much better if you pot them on gradually rather than plonk them into a huge container full of wet compost where the roots will probably rot. Mine usually end up in 10" pots similar to what you would use for tomatoes. As Shirl says, flower buckets are good value for final potting.

Thanks for the advice... I've looked everywhere for cheap pots!

I'll get myself down t my local Morrisons right away.

Are they a stock item, or are they a 'by-product' from their flower section?

By product from the flowers. Our store has them under a table with potted plants on it - check carefully round the flowers and plants section or ask a storeperson. I am told that Asda give the buckets away but ours doesn't.

As rustylady says though, don't pot them on from a 3 inch pot to a 10 litre bucket or they will stop growing for a while. Find an in between size pot (around 5 inch) then pot on again when the roots are showing

If you want cheap ... I'm using 2 litre placcy milk bottles as containers. Cut off the tops and handles, and punch holes for drainage. Being square, they tessellate nicely too.

I've used plastic milk containers too. I also find they make good plant labels...

I've pillaged the containers they get the cleaning material in at work. They hold about a gallon and I cut the top off to make a rectangular pot! I'm well into tesselation whatever that may be!
