  • Onion and Dwarf Bean seeds

I planted onion and dwarf bean seeds 7 weeks ago and there's no sign of life,
Both planted in a bed that I added compost to before winter,
Are these likely to grow or is the lack of activity telling me otherwise?

Hi, welcome to the vine seanyd6bg!
Sorry but I think I have to confirm what you already suspect....
The beans certainly should germinate within a couple of weeks, in nice warm temperatures they can come up within a week! Onions seem to take a little longer and are more difficult to spot (being long and thin) but again they should be with you already.
I think beans are susceptible to rotting in the wet and the slugs will make short work of unprotected seedlings - often eating them before you see them!
It's not too late to plant some more. I normally germinate my beans in a pot and plant them out when they grow their first/second true leaves otherwise my slugs eat them all!
Don't know where in the country you are but if you're anywhere near me you haven't lost much time, my beans have only been up a few weeks and the chilliness means they haven't started growing too much yet.
    Good luck!

      Seeds

      Thanks for that,
I wasn't too hopeful with the onions as I was warned they are difficult to grow from seed, better with sets,
as for the dwarf beans, may be I sowed them too early i.e.April and should have given them a head start in my conservatory,
However, it is only my first year at growing veg and everything else is doing very well so I musn't grumble,
I'll just put it down to a learning experience,
      Thanks for your useful reply!
