  • How's your sweetcorn doing?

Mine is about 2 foot tall now, I would expect it to be doing better in the south of the UK. If your growing sweetcorn how is it doing and where do you live?

About four inches! I'm growing 'Minipop' and it's the first sweetcorn I've grown, so I'm not that sure how big it'll get.

Mine is about 3 feet with the fringey (?) flower bit coming out of the top which on one plant has exploded and put alot of pollen into the air - tis in the polytunnel though. First year I have grown any, so quite exciting.

Hi Slug, will be interested to see how your corn comes along as we don't live too far apart. I have never grown it but am always saying i must do. Did you grow it indoors or outdoors ?

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Hi Bramble - I'll keep you posted with the sweetcorn. I'm not expecting much this year as I planted it late and I don't think it's in the best spot in the garden.

It's growing outside but since I don't have a huge plot, I think it may be in a spot which is too shady. I'll keep you posted all the same!

If it isn't too successful this year, I think I'll still give it a go again (as the plants look lovely and healthy), but I'd start them earlier and put them in a sunnier spot.

Mine are 3ft and 5ft (2 batches), the top flowers are all fully open and I've got corns that are looking/feeling pretty good.

I can't believe it as this is my first year gardening . My OH just rolls his eyes when I get a new crop of something and shout look look .

Looks the south has more mature corn's than the north, I am not in the least jealous

Noticed last night that one of the corns even at the 2 foot mark is starting to show the male flower, when that appears does it keep growing to produce the female flower? Silly question I guess but new to the corn growing game

Is the male flower the tassely bit that looks like a weird hairdo? I'm new to this too.

Mines probably about 2ft now too but no sign of flowers. Probably not getting quite enough sun but seems that everything is almost a month behind to I'm holding on to some hope of homegrown corn this year!

Still plenty of time to crop MissyMoo. I bought two trays of half dead plants at a bootfair for 20p at the weekend. Hoping to get them in tonight, before they grow legs and walk to the veg patch!

A couple of tips I've picked up (for those who don't already know):
                          1) Plant in a block at least 1m square to increase pollination rates (I guess too late for some, but you could try hand pollination if you haven't done this)
                          2) Get the water boiling before you cut the cobs - oh the sweet, sweet joy.
                          Resistance is fertile

i was aware about planting in blocks but space meant that i could only plant 2 small rows. Worth a try
