How's your sweetcorn doing?

I've got a real live sweetcorn growing on the lower part of the plant Got nice tassels on the top too. When I found it tonight it was too dark to take a photograph. I am soooo chuffed, not having grown them before. It might not come to much, but glad to have got the plant this far.

Can anyone tell me - do you need to stake the plants? Mine are growing quite tall.

Be excited to see how you all get on. Didn't reckon I had much chance in the west of Scotland , but, maybe with a bit of care and planning it's possible. Could be a good topic for the weatherboard.

Steve, looking good. I would say mine is about 2/3 weeks behind yours. It's very likely that the south will see the crop develop first in that time span. Could be that we have a late crop in the north (but hopefully no so late mr frost pays a visit).

ok, in the far south here: mines' about 4' tall now, with flower/tassels coming through. am growing courgettes and rocket around the edges.

My plants look spindly and bare in comparison. Still trying to get a pic - too grey today. Do different varieties of sweetcorn grow differently ?

Saw an allotment on Saturday with some 5/6 foot corns !! Only a few miles from here too, I think it's postioned on a south facing slope and must be getting a day of sun with no shade, it was huge!!

I,m in Plymouth, Devon and mine are about 4ft now the flowery bit has started to poke it's head through so really happy.
I don't know if it helps anyone but they need lots of sun and water which is not easy at this time of year we have put straw around the bases as a dry mulch and they doubled in size within a fortnight, this retains loads of moisture.
Went there this morning and hadn't water since saturday morning and the ground was still so damp that the mud stuck to your fingers..

'Normal' sweetcorn doing really well. I am also growing Minipop for the first time this year;

Has anyone else grown Minipop? I understand that you start to harvest when the tassels start to appear, as opposed to when the tassels start to die off.

Any info would be gratefully received.

My sweetcorn are about 6 foot, compared to Steve's though, the flowery middle part is a little underwhelming... I was wondering, how many sweetcorn can you expect from a plant? I read somewhere usually one, but maybe two with a good feed? I've never grown it before so any advice appreciated!

I underplant my with cabbage, the wide leaves on these act as a great shade and help keep the ground moist. Of course it does mean that my corns and my cabbage fight it out for nutients in the soil but with a vast volume of winter dug manure and a weekly top dress if of coffee grinds everyone seems happy. Mine has put on a foot or so of growth in the last week or so, one corn now has the flower half exposed. With all this sun and high temps the corns are marching

I have mine in a washtub with courgettes and they are about 3' high and doing well. Will take pictures soon and post on.

10 days ago my corns where 3 feet heigh, 10 days of blazing hot sun and they are now breaking the 6 foot mark with the male and female flowers now fully extended. Goes to show what a heat wave can do !
