  • Garlic Pulled Today

Today I have pulled my garlic, of the 27 planted last september, 24 remained till today. This was the first time I had ever planted in september, as I had always assumed it was a spring planter, also with poor results. The results speak for themselves this time as I have 24 very good sized garlic laid on the patio

This is something I shall be doing again this year

That's great BigstU. I'm very envious.... I planted garlic saved from the prvious years planting last ctober but I had chcikens at the time that roamed my garden and they kept pulling them up. I wouldn't have minded if they actually ate them but they'd just leave them lying around each time! Wanten vandelism if you ask me

As such, I have no homegrown garlic this year and will be certainly buying some this autumn to get started

Not just chickens Shortie, but all birds!!!! Had a similiar prob with mine last year when planted, so I laid a big mesh of sticks over them. That worked! also stopped the darn cats from using the area as a toilet

I found that suspending some of those useless CD's over the area stopped the birds pretty well.
They are also very good for scraping moss off the patio (so I guess they aren't as useless as I had thought ).

I pulled mine up about 3/4 weeks ago, really good result for me as well. Stank the greenhouse drying it and now making some killer garlic bread with basil The wait is well worth it.

Thanks everyone for the garlic news. Mine are still in pots. They haven't gone down yet so will give them a bit longer. First time I have tried them so just a bit of an experiment for me. I have some wild garlic growing on some ground I own ( not in my cultivated garden) so may go and have a look there. It's the first year I have time to bother with such things.
As for those useless CD'S. I used to hand them out in the office for desk coasters. Quite jazzy.

              Hi all,

Very excited today as I pulled my 30 garlic bulbs this evening. So proud of them that I thought I'd attach a piccie!!

OK, so maybe nothing to be that proud of, but they're much bigger and better than last year's crop

I'm currently stinking out the utility room to dry them

I know.... I can still smell it as I'm typing on the computer - and I've washed and scrubbed my hands!

I'll be popular at work tomorrow

Hi Slug, the garlics looking good. Don't forget to plait it like the French do. Makes it look the real thing.
                      Enjoy. Gabrielle.

                        Hi Bramble,

I was planning on making some plaits for the garlic, but I'm not sure if i can do it straight away can I? Do I have to wait for it to dry a bit first? I realise that it has to be floppy still for me to be able to plait, but not sure when is the right time. Some of the stems still seem a bit stiff you see...
