Garlic Pulled Today

That's really useful! I tried braiding my garlic last year but, well, it was a bit of a disaster...! This is just what I needed.

Go on you lot rub it in.Cos I wasn't to good at end of last year,didn't get my winter garlic in(Have always planted in winter with good results),so planted spring instead.TOTAL DISASTER-EVERY SINGLE ONE ROTTED OFF!Def need winter planting.Was told by old gardener that garlic needs frost or snow in winter to give good crop.Looks like he's right.

Presumably, I should wait another 8 weeks or so before pulling my Early Wight garlic?

Thanks for the website SBP - that's so handy! I had a go at plaiting mine last year and it looked not a bit like the picture! Perhaps with some guidance from the website, I can turn my garlic plaits into master pieces!

When I had garlic last year I tried plaiting it too, but it ended up looking more like my hair when I've just woken up

Instructions would have been very handy at the time needless to say...

You must use a better conditioner Shortie and cut out those split ends

I got super garlic last year, but the stalks were rock hard, no way could I have plaited them. It was solent white - should that have happened? I think some garlics are called hard neck - is that what it means, the stalk?

I'm a little worried about my garlic too since I have a hard neck variety and I'm hoping that the necks will soften up a bit before plaiting! I've been drying mine for the last few days and the leaves are looking decidedly more floppy. I'm hoping that the necks will be too, as they're very thick and I think they're going to be a nightmare to plait!

Hi Slug, some onions and garlic develop hard or thick neck. No one knows for sure what causes it but if onions or garlic develop it , its better to use them first as they will not store long term.
Good luck with the plaiting, mine are done but look nothing like the picture.

Hi all,

Well.... I plaited the first 13 of my garlics today. I let them dry out for a while in my utility room, then I damped them down today (as the website told me) between two tea towels to soften them up.

Well.... I have to say I'm pretty impressed! Compared to last year, my garlic plait is looking quite good! I have the website to thank totally and utterly..... such good instructions!!

Thanks once again for passing that on SBP - have saved it to my favourites now!

Looks good slug. I planted mine too late (about Feb) so the bulbs didn't split. I've used most of it already. I'll definitely plant in Oct this year.

Thanks SBP - but I have your great website find to thank! Last year's plaiting efforts were a disaster by comparison!!

Blackkitty - like you I also planted some spring garlic (white), but mine is all bolting now and the stalks don't look as thick as my purple garlic (in the photo). I'm waiting for the big dissapointment when I pull them later in the year!
