  • Potato from seed.

    Hello hello!

Last year i left one of main crop potatos to fruit and managed to save some seed. Now i'm aware that growing from TPS (true potato seed) is a rarity and won't gurantee success or similar chracteristics BUT i've read that it also means that you can't pass on blight through infected tubers and even has a reduced risk of other passing on other diseases too.

I've got two heathly plants growing in largeish pots in the garden at the moment and i'm pretty excited about the possibilities. Does anyone else here have any experience growing from TPS?

If you're interested then you can find more info

I've never tried it, but my Desiree produced seed last year and I wondered whether to give it a go. Which variety are you growing? I'll be interested to hear how you go on with them

As far as I know Desiree is a hybrid. Because we use vegetative production ie tubers this wouldn't matter but if grown from seed you won't get Desiree spuds, if any at all.
Somewhere in it's lineage it has Duke of York genes methinks, or some other well known potato!

I grew king edwards last year via the old sprouting super market spuds route. very dodgey i know but everything got blight anyway

The TPS trial plants are now about 1' high and growing well. I've just had some of my main crop pots start to flower so i hope i can get something out of the berries to continue my experiments next season.

I should say that i'm not banking on getting any spuds from the TPS plants so i've still got three bags of other pots on the go.

I'll try keep you guys posted,
