  • hessia dwarf beans

    i have five hessia dwarf beans in pots and growing great but very leggy,not at all like bush in photo.they are all opening flowers now and i dont know if i,m supposed to feed them and if so what type of food. thank goodness for this site or there would be lot of sick veggies

    Not sure about your question Greg. Have you got all the beans in separate pots. That could be why you are not getting that bush look. I grow them all together - about 8 in a big container.
    And yes, beans are very greedy plants - for food and water. What you feed them with is up to you - organic or not - as long as there is plenty of it.I plant them in a 50/50 mixture of compost and manure.

      beans are in seperate pots.can i use my tomato food for beans,the one with the seaweed extract.strange not many leaves but loads of flower buds.

        Yes you can use your tomato food Greg. You won't get that bushy look with the beans all in single pots though.

          My advice is to leave well alone - I have grown Hestia in pots for several years and had a decent crop each time, doing nothing more than giving them a few short stakes for support.

          They start off rather leggy, not shrubby, but they keep growing and producing for several weeks, so they will change over time. The beginning of June is still early days for runner beans.

          What size pots are you using?

            about eight inch pots. loads of flowers,do they normally all set as beans

              In my experience they are lot more reliable than the climbing runners, but it depends on your insect population and the weather.

              Climbing runners in our garden don't crop well - I can't explain why, I've done everything I can to help them - but Hestia do us proud.
