  • Tomato hanging baskets

Have I made a mistake? I have planted 5 hanging baskets with Gardener's delight variety (approx 4 plants per basket). Are they going to tumble down or just try to keep growing skywards and then snap?

Should I leave them be or transplant them into grow bags and learn to look at the packet next year!

Think that Gardener's Delight are cordon type ie will grow tall and upright. I've got Gartenperle in hanging baskets this year and they're begginning to fall over the edges very nicely but there are loads of other types including non-red varieties.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I'm growing Balconi Red and Yellow in my baskets.
As Alison said G/Delight are Cordons and aren't designed for baskets.

You certainly have, but never mind. Gardener's Delight is a cordon (tall) variety. What you need for baskets is a tumbling or bush variety. Gartenperle is a good one. If your Gardener's Delights are still alive, transplant them into large pots, give support with a cane and you will get delicious tomatoes.

I presume you've mixed up Gardeners Delight with Garden Pearl (aka Gartenperle)?

I look forward to seeing the piccys of your hanging baskets, the plants should grow pretty tall!

                    I'm 6'2" and I reckon I might need a ladder. I think I'll transplant them!
