  • Goji Diseases

Suddenly everyone around me is panicking about Goji Berries habouring diseases, however I missed the episode of Gardeners World. Did anyone see it?

The goss is that they are from the same family as Tomatoes and Potatoes, but as they are hardy and perennial, any diseases could be retained over Winter.

Can anyone clarify and ease my mind? Do I need to dig my two up and destroy? What is everyone else doing?

I saw G.World & Joe Swift was pulling out all the gojiberries they'd planted on his allotment. They've been withdrawn from sale by lots of companies because of the risk of some carrying previously unkown diseases into the country which could cross over & affect tomatoes & potatoes. It's only certain plants which have come from outside europe but lots have been imported into the country from Holland which should be O.K. but there is a possibility that these originated from elsewhere originally. I think if you just have one or two plants in your garden & /or they were bred in the U.K. you should be fine but Joe was pulling his out as he was worried about infecting all the other allotments.
Here's a link to Defra about the problem.

Still going ahead with mine and do not at this stage intend to dig mine up. My plants are healthy and when I recieved them they were bare rooted and looked really healthy. I know some people who recieved plants this year were saying the plants looked like dried sticks. The point I'm trying to make is untill you know for sure where your plants originated from I would carry on.

        From the defra pdf

There is little available information on the pest and diseases of goji berry plants.
At this stage, no organisms of concern have been detected in the limited number of plants analysed by Defra’s Central Science Laboratory

Another non story? well I am keeping mine.
