  • Is it too late for beans?

Discovered this morning that the slugs have nobbled most of my beans, down to the ground Is it too late to sow some more? I have French Bean Cobra and Runner Bean Sunset, they were both very slow to germinate. I'm really annoyed as they were all growing so well and now there are only three left! Grrr...

Forgot to say, they also took off one of my squash plants, again at ground level! Is it too late to sow another of these? It's Sunburst F1 variety.

They will grow faster than the first ones too. The weather is warmer (although you don't notice for the rain!)

Agreed - perfect timing and, because of the warmth, they;ll germinate loads quicker than your original bean seeds. Get on with the squash though, they need a long season to come to fruition.

Wow, Flummery - we've posted identical things at exactly the same moment - spooky! (or 'jinx' as we used to say when I was a kid!)
          Cheers

It's taken the season so long to get started that I am not sticking to sowing times particularly. My philosophy is if in doubt ..try it!

                hi,winky
they should be ok, its a lot warmer now,i put mine in, in early may for that earlier crop,
then i put some more in late may,the first lot have flowers on,try to germinate in pots 1st so they are stonger, also when planted in the ground put SLUG pellets around the bottom,
                i found that works.

I almost always start my beans off in root trainers then plant them out a couple of weeks later. That way you have a stonger plant that can manage to withstand a bit of slug damage. Personally I don't like using slug pellets and go for using beer traps and a lot of stamping!

Re the is it too late question, I once shoved some seeds in the ground at the end of June and still got a small but rather late crop.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
