  • onion sets still available in shops?

Does anyone know where I can get some onion sets for overwintering? Or do I have to use seeds? I can't seem to find any in the shops and used all my spring planted ones in spring. Will I have to mail order? Thanks

So I presume they have sold out of spring ones and are waiting to get the autumn ones in, hence why I can't find any - doh!

      Thanks janeyo

Sorry, I'm confused. You don't plant overwintering onion sets till late summer/early Autumn, so they won't be in the shops yet. Seed grown onions are usually used for traditional main crop onions, sown early spring, grown through summer, and harvested Autumn.

You can get Japanese onions seeds that you sow in August, or japanese sets that go in around Sept/Oct, both for overwintering.
Main crop onions grown forom seed are sown dec to march usually inside to start with.
Main crop onion sets are planted March/April.
          I think!

I planted onion seeds, as an experiment, in mid may, Red onions and Spring Onions, they currently look like thin grass. My reasoning is that with warmer autumns I am hoping I can harvest as onions in Ocotber/November...

            We'll see?!?!?!
