My asparagus seeds have arrived, says to use warm water

Hi my seeds arrived (quickly so that's good) but it says to soak them in warm water for 48 hours. Does this mean I have to keep the water warm for 48 hours or do I put them in warm water and then let it go cold and it will be ok? Bit confused!

Also how many can I get in half a seed tray?

It also says to transplant into a nursery bed when big enough - can I put them in pots instead and over winter them in the greenhouse?

You sow them in April. I wouldn't do it now. Grow Asparagus from seed with our detailed advice

I thought they might be ok in the greenhouse.

I had 12 new crowns and only got 2 left as the others have rotted away. So the bed is looking really strange. Thought I might sow some seed and see what happens for next year or the year after or however long it takes....

Can you sow them in the autumn too?

And do I need to chop off the fluffy spindly ferns from the 2 remaining crowns or let them die off?
