We no longer have fish and I am trying to persuade Madmax to let me keep the tank so I can have a go at growing fresh veggies in it in the winter.

Thats how I grow my chili's, 4' X 15" X 18" aquarium, heater in about 3" of water, polystyrene sheet on water, seed trays/insers floating on top,, works a treat

What about Kohl Rabi it is a fairly quick growing veg similar to turnip, and I have not usually had the same problem of flea beetle with kohl rabi that I have had wih swede and turnip.

Most suppliers do kohl rabi now, Suttons do a speedy seeds one that is supposed to be ready in about 10 weeks (if you can keep the slimeys off it). Think you might find it in Wilkinsons too.

I thought "greens" is any of the leafy bits from brassicas, not just young cabbages but would include turnip / swede tops, broccoli leaves etc? Possibly "spring greens" is just one of those vague ingredients...

Kohlrabi seeds are quite widely available, I think.

Kohl rabi is another brassica, same as cabbage etc. I don't think that would be suitable.

Hugh was just talking about nettles as spring greens. Might be worth taking advice on them since they're free.

                      hi there chillimad,

We keep chinese water dragons and this year i started my peppers and aubergines from seed in the smallest viv and got a good germination rate by starting them this way.

Can't help you to much with iggy diet as water dragons are more meat eaters than veggie but have you tried herbs or privet hedge leaves or seeing your local greengrocer about spoiled not rotten fruit and veg you can buy cheap , a small independent would most likely be more willing than a supermarket.

I did a search on british poisinos plants some time ago and there was not that many so it might be worth a google to find out or try the web site captive bred as they also have info on iggys.

As you said they have been under your care for 5 years so you can't be doing anything wrong and alot of info about these animals are very conficting and sometimes contradicting and i find the best info comes from recorded scientific / natural websites that have seen them in the wild doing what comes naturally.

p.s also forgot your local florist for flowers heads they can't use

Hi Chillimad two of my sons work in an Aquatics and reptile shop. One of them keeps frogs, snakes and a bearded dragon as well as other stuff, the other has two gecko's so if you need any advice pm me and I will ask them.

These are all foods you can grow for Iggys: coriander, parsley, lambs lettuce, chinese leaf, leek, mange tout, green pepper, apple, lettuce, kale, spinach, collard/spring greens, mustard greens turnip tops, dandelion leaves

I guess leaf beet would be suitable too? It's related to beetroot not cabbage.

Thanks TS, I notice that you also have picked up on collard greens/Spring greens,, this is really confusing, as I was fairly confident that spring greens were not cabbage or infact even a brassica,,

Spring greens (as sold in Tesco etc) are young cabbages (without hearts).
I have Googled a few sites, and nobody mentions that they can't eat cabbage. Not one. Here are three sites that I looked at:
                              1) Green Iguana Care Sheet Page
                              2) http://journals.cambridge.org/downlo...90e75cf703ee45
                              3) Iguana Diets - iguana.co.uk

                                Hi,
Many Many Many sites especially Mellisa Kaplans one Anapsid.org clearly used to state :

"goitrogens which are present in the cabbage family and they prevent iodine being absorbed by iguanas which can cause swollen thyroid glands"

I have just re-checked the information that I have for the last five years based my feeding on and now it appears to have changed somewhat, however it is still not a good idea to feed items from the cabbage family..

I will gradually now withdraw the spring greens for the sake of safety as I was totally unaware that they were infact from the cabbage family.

Thanks to all that have said that they are cabbages :-(
