  • Onion mildew

It seems as if the pest and disease season is now into full swing. couple of posts going about potato blight. Another one to watch out for is mildew on onions and shallots, it has started on our lottie and will not be long before it spreads to everyones. The one it started on had a really great looking row of healthy green shallots and yesterday from a distance they didn't look green but a sickly grey. On a closer inspection you could see the mildew on the green stems. As far as I am aware there is no cure but he shallots can be lifted and used. I have not found that mildew affects the storing qualities providing you dry them properly. Obviously the harvest will be reduced as the bulbs have not reached full maturity.
