Crooked cabbages

Hi all

Has this happened to anyone else, help,

I planted out some cabbages and a couple of caulies at beging of May everything went well, then cold and wind had an effect

My cabbages are now sideways and upright, as if the wind blew them over and then they got back on their feet

The cabbages are out of the ground with a sideways ground level two inches and then upright growing reasonably well

question is will they keep growing or will the strain be too much for the sideways stalk once they start hearting up

I'd like to know the answer to this as well as I have a purple sprouting broccoli plant that's doing the same thing - horizontal, then vertical. I thought maybe I should replace it, but is it too late to start from seed?

This is quite common, especially if you sow the seed in cells and for one reason or another do not get them planted out when they are ready - don't worry about it - the plant will cope - might spoil the appearance of nice a straight rows but it will grow perfectly well.

See my response to Lizt re crooked stems - though PSB is more of a problem as it grows so tall. If you want you can plant it anyway and grow some more from seed - it's not too late yet. (I'm intending to sow 1000 seeds of PSB tomorrow so it better not be too late !!

How big are the plants and are they in their final position. If they aren't then when you put them into final position plant crooked bit below the surface and you get straight plants again. With psb if it is in final situ then put a stake in ground and tie plant to stake. Crooked plants don't usually affect the final harvest.

Guess I prob sow more than most on the Vine, but I'm getting quite good at it now - so long as I have my ears plugged into my MP3 player, I can fairly shift at sowing seed - sowed 10,000 leeks this morning !! The slow bit is planting out !! I'll have 15,000 leeks to plant out - I reckon 10 days work at least - unless I can get Iona and her pals round for a leek planting party and BBQ during the summer holidays

10,000 - 15,000 leeks, I like leeks but 100 was knackering!

Jings, sewer rat, have you got a smallholding ... or maybe even a farm?

I have three PSB plants, so you can see why I'm getting in a panic about a third of them being a bit, erm, angular.

Unfortunately the wind has been busy over the last couple of days and I've lost a couple more cabbages but those that are left seem to be doing okay


15000 leeks, good grief, I thought I was doing well with 60, rewarded myself with my first full harvest of strawberries If I had 15000 I'd need a holiday
