  • Raised Beds .....

My first day on this wonderfully entertaining site, and I have my first of, no doubt many, queries.
I have built one raised bed already in my garden, which is producing many great vegetables, thanks to my wife's efforts. We do require more beds though to meet our own needs of being as self-sufficient as possible. Any ideas on construction materials for these beds that will not break the bank, and will enable approximately 24"-30" height, and an 8 foot by 4 foot footprint on each bed? Who says that you cannot put your foot in it twice in a row?
My primary bed has been constructed from old railway sleepers that have been sealed with pond liner to prevent tar contamination. This has worked very well to date, but sleepers, ANY sleepers, are expensive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as long as it does not involve the use of an old four-poster.

    In anticipation.....

    Mike

Hi you will find loads of useful info here, and good entertainment too! It's very addictive...

I got the wood for my beds from a local scaffolders. He asked for £4 for a 13 foot length. He even helped OH to chop them to size to get them in the car. They are often glad to get rid of the old boards, some even give them away.

What a great idea! My OH used 4 x 2 ft lengths that he had left over from things - they may not last forever, but the herb beds he built from it have lasted 6 years!

        Hi,
Many thanks for the tip, I will certainly consider the option.
You said that the site can be addictive.... you're certainly not kidding. I've spent many hours today reading thread after thread. The jokes have had me in stitches, and I can quite honestly say that this beats anything on the box.

        All the best,

        Mike
