  • what have you got in permanently?

This is my second year on the plot and all of my beds have veggies growing that are finished at the end of the year (well, except for my rasps!)

I was wondering what kind of permanent crops people grew? I'm going to put in an asparagus bed next year and someone told me that cape gooseberries stay in the ground for several years - is this true?

    thanks.

Surely a veg plot is incomplete without rhubarb? There are herbs too, a small fruit tree, strawberries, a grapevine, redcurrants, blackcurrants, balckberries, tayberries, logan berries. How's that for starters?

We've got permanent beds for Rhubarb, Raspberries, Strawberries, Currants, Apple and Pear trees, Goosegogs, Fartichokes and a Comfrey bed and Foxglove bed, plus of course a herb bed, tho whether you class this as permanent or not depends, there are some permanent plants in there, but also some annuals that have to be resown every year! We inherited a large asparagus bed, but unfortunately it was too weed infected and had been neglected for too long, so the crowns had rotted, its a crop that we may well try again in the future tho!

We have apples, pears, plums, rhubarb, gooseberries and blackcurrants. I am also eagerly awaiting the arrival of my asparagus plants next week, which will hopefully become a permanent bed (though I'm very dubious of having ordered them as plants instead of crowns now, so everybody cross their fingers and toes for me!)
Also permanently have couch grass and bindweed!

Just a few others to add! Seakale, Cardoon and Nine Star Perennial cauli's...........oh,....... I nearly forgot about Horseradish also!

btw Cape Gooseberries need to be grown in the greenhouse in my area as they are NOT frost hardy and don't even like the comparatively cold North Eastern summers!

There tends to be more in the way of fruit than veg for a permanent position. Another few you could include are goji berry, blueberry(ericatious compost) and the tamarillo. Oh and don't forget vines.

I'm trying to move my garden to more permanent crops and a few raised beds for salad etc as I am now an old crock...

Mint, rosemary , bay , thyme and fennel (we live by the sea and the latter is practically a weed)

Rhubarb, strawberries, gooseberries, black currant and white currant.

I've just planted apple, pear and plum trees.

I would like to do some artichokes (and fartichokes!!) and keep meaning to start an asparagus bed although I've been here 12 years now and am always going to do it "next year"
