i have started my tobacco 3weeks ago and they are growing well i have golden Virginia and some nicotiana rustica

My neighbouring allotment grow tobacco and have grown it successfully for about 5 years. He grows it for hims
Self and when it is ready he hangs it in his shed and spare bedroom to dry. He originally bought the seeds on the internet. He hasnt had to buy any tobacco since he started. When he first grew it I checked out for him on the internetif it was legal or if he was looking for trouble as he was a bit concerned. It is fine grow as long as you dont sell it.

We tried growing our own tobacco last year, the plants came up fine, lovely looking plant and flower, but the drying and curing is hard, you have to have just the right temp and conditions. We grew 4 plants in all and took all the leaves (rather large leaves) and tried to dry them. They seem to be going fine, drying nicely, then all of a sudden, they started to get a horrible mould on them.

hi, ive come across this thread while looking for advice on growing golden virginia tobacco plants,mine are thriving with huge leaves,however, i was not exspecting them to flower so early,each plant is showing the start of flower buds and they are only 2 to 3 foot high,i was told to exspect 5 foot plants before they flowered

It's the big leaves that you want so I wouldn't worry. The flower spike will continue to shoot upwards as the flowers develop. Wait until the leaves turn from green to yellowish and snap off easily before you start harvesting them. They will do this from the bottom of the plant upwards.

I started my plants quite late this year so they are still pretty small.

In the interest of protecting the forum, here's my understanding of the legailities and practicalities of growing/producing for your own consumption ...

Tobacco seeds are legal to buy, and it's perfectly legal to grow the plants or buy leaf as an "agricultural product". The curing is a very tricky process to get right, and cigar/pipe/snuff tobacco needs to be alkaline, whilst cigarette smoke needs to be acid (which is why cigarette smoke is inhaled, but the others aren't). Nicotine/tobacco apparantly is also a very good insecticide, but is indiscriminate ... i.e. it will hurt the goodies as much as the baddies

Any tobacco processed for smoking (pipe, cigar or cigarette) is subject to excise duties and must be declared even for personal use, whereas any tobacco processed for consumption as nasal snuff (or as an insecticide) is not. No duty whatsoever on nasal snuff, even the stuff you might get from the local tobaconnists. Use this info however you wish, but let's not get the forum in any bother with any "only if you get caught" type talk

I've never tried growing any, but apparantly in the South they might need a little shade, whereas in the North will probably need full sun. Still no guarantees of success though, it all depends on weather and local conditions just like anything else. Apparantly the leaves tend to be picked undividually rather than the whole plant harvested at one time. Extra care MUST be taken with Nicotiana Rustica if grown for consumption in any way, as this is several times stronger in nicotine and other alkaloids than the conventionally used tobaccos.

A final off-the-wall semi-relevant fact, is that the oldest surviving snuff mill in the world is actually in Sheffield, and the water wheel which used to drive the mill and grind the powder is still functional today

thought yous might like to know my plants thrived,and are busy curing/drying as i type,we planted around 30 and the results are shed loads of leaves,hopefuly keep us supplied for quite a while, i did look up on the law and it is legal to buy the seed,plant and leaves,it doesnt become liable to exsize duty till its shredded into usable tobacco,and even then customs and exsize have said they have no intention of hounding hobby growers,and its a bit up in the air as it was brought in in 1992 and there are still no guidelines in place as to how the exsize duty could or would be collected,so i think we are ok for now, we have tried our first few leaves and the early results are very promising,would love to hear if anyone else has had any success

My crop this year has been disappointing because all the plants got mosaic virus (see pic below). I haven't even bothered harvesting any leaves yet, but will probably try and salvage some before I clear the ground.

Last years crop is still curing, I will bring it back into case and try some after Christmas to see how it's getting on.
