  • Pepper seeds

My bell pepper seeds have just failed! Not surprising really but I can't understand why. I left them in the correct depth of soil in a sunny window ledge for 1 week but to no avail! Though i fear I may not have given them enough chance?
I got my seeds from a pepper and dried them out then planted them at a 0.5" depth. Should I try leaving them on a damp paper towel under my desk lamp or somthing to keep the heat correct? Can anyone help? I really want a bell pepper bush!

    Thankyou!

    Hi New Bud,

In my expirience, bell peppers are a bit slow to germinate, the best I could manage was about 1 week, and that was on top of hot radiator. I'd say, give it a chance and leave it for another week. Also, if you haven't done so already, make sure that seed tray is covered with plastic bag or cling film.

Just a thought, did all your seeds came from one pepper? ?If nothing happens, they could just be duff. I have managed to raise some plants from Tai Chilli fruit by saving seed too.

Anyway, keep us updated and good luck,

Nope it was different peppers for that very reason. Ill put them in my airing cupboard I think to edge them along. Thanks!

I'm no expert, but mine took about a month to germinate so I would definitely give them a bit more time.

1 week isn't long for peppers to germinate. Damp the surface, cover them with a poly bag and they'll appear. it's maybe a bit late in the year now for them to grow on and ripen. Mine are up into flower. But good luck.

I planted some Purple Beauty Bell Peppers about 10 days ago but I know they can take up to 3 weeks to germinate. I'd leave them on the windowsill as they need light to germinate.

I put my peppers in in Jan/Feb because they do need a LONG season in this country. Some of them now have fruit but to get them ripe I need all the long days I can get. I think in a few weeks you will get your little pepper plants but unless you keep the plants over winter you're unlikely to get peppers this season. Try to over-winter them and get your seeds in early next year! Good luck!

B&Q have had a variety of pepper plants in, your local GC might too, Wilkos maybe. You can practice growing the plant and then next year sow your seed earlier and keep it warmer.

                        I'm with everyone else here.

I'm growing chilli peppers and the slower ones took their time. The quick ones came up within a week, whereas the slow ones up to a month.
Saying that - after pretty much all the plants had been re-potted, I had around 2 "strugglers" that popped up 6 weeks after being sown!
And I'm germinating in a heated propagator.

If your seeds pop up - definetly try to overwinter them indoors. You'll be well ahead of anyone else. With some luck you could have the first fruit as early as March/April (without having fancy lights or using hydro/aeroponics)!

As smallblueplanet mentioned - B&Q does peppers. In some stores they are reduced to as little as 30p! I've also seen peppers with big juicy fruits in Homebase. the small pots were around £7 and the big one around £13. They did look like they needed rescueing and re-potting asap though. (horrible DIY store ppl not looking after them)

                        Hope that helps.
                        Over-excited and no clue.

                            Hi,
You all asked me to keep you posted on my pepper seeds so I thought I'd let you know that the ones I put in the airing cupboard in the resealable bag between kitchen towel have rooted! I put the strongest seed in its own pot with compost etc...
