Growing Sweetcorn in pots

Last year, my outdoor crop grew to around 6ft.
But my friend who grew in his tunnel, his crop came to around 7ft and that was planted in the ground.
So you have to account for the pot too.
I don't know about pot size?
I was just going to use compost bags like grow bags.
I will be having an outdoor crop too, just wanted to do a test to see if their was a great difference or not

And it might still be a month early to start them off. They get growing quickly and do not tolerate frost......I plan to sow in root trainers at the end of April. Early may.....

I've grown them in the "infamous" Morrisons flower buckets quite successfully. They have been fairly closely planted so that they can get friendly and cuddle up when the wind blows to pollinate them.

I had six per bucket and five buckets on the go. Some produced more that one cob but all did produce.

Hi I grew some very closely spaced sweetcorn in 2 containers the year before last. The containers were about 34cm depth x 50cm length x 34cm width (size of a recycling tub) . I had 8 plants in each container which grew to around 6ft I think. I got about 12 cobs from those. The tubs had lots of rotted manure and compost in, and took a lot of water.

I hope I don't get someone in trouble but my local Asda gives then to me for free "as long as you don't take too many" if I ask the girls on customer service nicely. So I pick up 5 or so... every time I go... a couple of times a week...

Question: I am assuming that when you use the flower buckets, you need to drill drainage holes first???

Yes, you do. All containers for plants need drainage holes

I was about to post the same thing. The ariel type roots that mine produce are wider than the diameter of a flower bucket. I was thinking perhaps 1 per 5gallon bucket, but even then that'd be a squeeze?

I have cut a hole in the weed suppresant in the tunnel.
Dug a hole about 4 foot by 4 foot and about a foot down.
Layered dow some card.
I am in the process of filling it with manure and used chicken coop sawdust (I left it in an extra week too)
And will be mixing together thoroughly,
Then I will lay more card.
Then when I can get some more wood, I will be making a small raised bed the size of the hole, then fill that with some fresh compost.

Do you think this will give unfair results?!

Might have to do it for the outside corn too

I know this thred is about growing in pots.
But I pulled this thred out of the archives with th intention of using grow bags.
But raised beds are not that far from pots, are they

I'm growing sweetcorn for the first time this year and i was wondering how big a container i would need!
I hadn't noticed the date of the posts as i was to busy panicing at the words.... mine out growing tall.... mine are looking good... etc when i have only just bloomin sown mine!!!!

Well you're ahead of me then SM - I've been following the instructions on the packet which say to plant in April, so I've not even started yet! However, maybe I'll plant some today to see how they get along .
