  • Mad Courgette plants

I've attached a picture of the courgette plants (2) that i planted in my polytunnel earlier this year. As you can see from the picture they are currently about 5ft high and growing . I've never encountered this problem before i've always grown them outside before but thought as the polytunnel is a new addition and had a gap i would bring them on a bit quicker.

I wouldn't mind thier size if they were actually producing fruit, but all i have had is 2 measly courgettes while the outside plants are producing loads.

Does anyone have any ideas, I'm sorely tempted to either cut them back or dig them up as they have taken over the path and are really in the way

Sorry i can't help Xp as i have never grown corgettes but you can be sure there will be plenty of advice coming your way. Good Luck.

Sorry Xspye, I've never encounterd courgette plants 5 foot high. If they're producing nothing I would put them on the compost heap. Sorry to be so negative but I really don't think there is a magic formula to make them bear fruit. The pic wasn't very clear. Are you sure they're courgettes.

my plant last year grew loads o leafs and spread everywhere but no fruit. they would grow to about 2 inches and that was it. they were horribly dry too however much water the plant had. i looked after it for months before i got fed up. growing them this year and they are all fine. may be worth just cutting your losses. ive planted some 2nd week of this month to try and see if they would get going so late so it might be worth trying that. they germinate in no time

Thanks for the advice, they're definatly courgettes because i've had fruit from them and the ones I planted outside look normal.
I think i'm going to consign it to the compost heap and plant something else!
i've got another couple of plants outside that are doing really well, I guess they just don't do too well in a poly tunnel, you live and learn .

xspye, maybe the flowers weren't getting pollinated properly as the plants are in a polytunnel & maybe there aren't many insects in there. That could be why you haven't had much fruit. You could try hand pollinating the flowers if there are any & you haven't already composted your plants! They do look whoppers though & maybe if you've been feeding them a lot before the flowers appeared the leaves have grown at the expense of flowers & fruit. I've only grown mine outdoors & as yours outside are fine I'd stick to that.
