  • Growing Ginger

In the GTO magazine there was a litle bit about growing your own stir fries.

One piece was concerned growing ginger but it was not very in depth.

I had not realised you could grow ginger in the UK and being a lover of the stuff, it's something I'd like to try, if not this year then next.

I would assume you would need a pretty deep bed to grow this but have no idea about what time of year to plant or what soil type would be best.

Anyone got any info that might help or just put me off grow ginger?
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

I grew some ginger last year, in a pot. It grew absolutely fine in the warm conservatory until I went away and no-one watered it! Don't know how it would do outside. However, I'm also growing lemongrass in a pot and that definitely prefers the greenhouse to being sat outside in its pot, even at this time of year, so would recommend indoor growing if possible.

Just curious, can ginger be grown from supermarket bought tubers?

That's how I did it. Worked fine as long as you let it sprout first.

Hello Norazina, I'm trying some ginger (from the supermarket) in a pot in the conservatory. It's growing, but very slowly. I think it might be a plant that takes a while to get anything worthwhile.
As I understand the growing technique look at your supermarket stuff for the bits with little growing bumps on. Plant them in damp compost (not too wet) leaving the bumps sticking out. Thet take a while but they shoot into kind of curled up leaves.
Ginger likes to be warm but not in direct sun. I give mine dappled shade under yhe peppers. And keep damp but not wet.
Once the roots grow to a decent size pot on to bigger pot. That's the stage I haven't reached yet but hoping.
            Good luck.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Yes, good question. Is it too late to try starting off some tubers now?

Ginger can be grown quite well in the conservatory or greenhouse but does not give a great return on investment. I have found that the tuber will more or less double in size but because it doesn't have long enough to ripen it does not keep very well. Still I suppose double the size and a month or two in the fridge isn't to bad.
