  • Broccoli Bother

Dear All, Have got some Purple sprouting broccoli seedlings on the go in the green house and was hoping to plant them out soon. However there are brown 'splotches' on lots of the leaves and the plants generally don't seem very happy.

What's my problem? could it be that I got water on the leaves and they've scorched

    Cheers all.

Am new to the site, am new to the forum...and am new to the garden. Gulp.

Hi doozer - welcome to the forum!
i don't think broccoli likes to be too warm so if its in the greenhouse that might explain why it's not happy. Try putting it outside?
Are you able to post a picture?
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

It is best grown outside in a seed bed they don't like it to hot.

Thank you people for you replies, I'll put it on the patio and see if that helps. The cooler whether does seem to have made them happier.

They getting to be about 6" tall...should i get them in the ground now?

        cheers

Yes I would and remember they like firm soil or else they will blow over!

Sounds like they've been too warm, and I suspect the brown splotches are caused by watering from above so the leaves get wet and get scorched by sunlight. I sow mine in cell trays, germinate in the unheated greenhouse, and as soon as they're big enough ( 2 to 3 inches tall) they go outside on the garden bench or shelving until they're ready to transplant onto the lottie. If they're still in the greenhouse you do need to harden them off gradually by putting them outside during the day and bringing them back in at night for a few days. Is your greenhouse heated or not?
