i ve got boltardy beet growing well; but it seems to be growing on top of the soil ;should i earth it up like potatoes or is this normal ; many thanks for any replies

Think this is normal, that's how mine grow anyway

I grew them last year and exactly the same thing happened,just leave them and they should be ok as mine were.

You can earth up if you want, but they will be fine on top of the soil. They don't seem to suffer from "greening" like carrots and spuds.

But they do suffer from being eaten by slugs and pecked by birds so I would earth up for their own protection.
