  • Rust - will it spread?

I have just lifted some of my garlic and notice that I have rust on the leaves. Bulbs are excellent size. I have hung the garlic up in the greenhouse to dry. Is this sensible? Could it infect things such as tomatoes, peppers and "decorative" plants?

Not sure .Does it only affect members of the onion family
The greatness comes not when things go always good for you,but the greatness comes when you are really tested, when you take, some knocks, some disappointments;because only if youv'e been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.

          Hi
Last year I had it on my leeks but the onions & garlic were fine
          Doesn't make sense does it?

This rust type is quite specific to Alliums. it affects onions less often than other members, but it can spread. There is not much organic you can do about it anyway. (Although Protea recommended garlic spray )You should never compost diseased material...and preferable no alliums some maintain.

They will be fine in the greenhouse... unless it contains a massive chive or salad onion crop!

Beware - mine were next bto my rasberry plants and the rust spread from the garlic to the raspberries- eek. I pulled up all the affected garlic and tok off all the rasberry leaves with bright orange rust and thankfully it didn't spread ant further.
May all our seeds germinate and grow
