Growing Peas??

Being new to this vegetable growing hobby please excuse my ignorance.
I'm growing Ambassador peas on a plot and had naively thought that they would only grow to 2ft tall on the assumption that the packet recommended growing the twin rows 2ft apart (which I though was dictated by the eventual plant height)
Obviously not as they are nearly 4ft tall and still on the rampage.
Do I need to nip the pea heads out to stop growth or does any one know how high this variety can grow?
Needless to say there are a lot of peas coming our way assuming I am tall enough to pick the little buggers!

My advice would be pinch out the growing tips to encourage a better crop.

Lucky you jxc001 as my peas don't seem to be heading for the skies at all, any ideas anyone ? Very nice the ones we've had though.

Welcome to the Vine JXC. I believe about 5' would be normal.
If you want to grow a smaller variety try Kelvendon Wonder. They will only do 2 to 3 feet.
But think of all those lovely peas. Mine never make it to a pot.

Peas are very different in growth type. I have Markana which grow to barely 2 ft but produce huge amounts. I also have some tall ones - they are currently 6ft and also producing loads. Ambassador is a tall pea. It either needs a wigwam, or two rows, as suggested on your packet, but supported by an A shaped frame - like you would runner beans. JXC, your peas might be a lower growing variety. They might never get taller.

Older varieties were all tall peas - some even only produced their peas on the top few feet - they were called 'crown peas' because they produce their flowers and fruits on the crown of the plant. Smaller varieties were introduced to help farmers to pick the crop by machine.

am growing fletham first and kelvedon wonder,have got loads and loads of peas they al;l all staked with canes,would deff reccomend feltham first pea
