A certain amount of stones will aid the drainage in a clay soil.
We too have clay soil and all we did to get it just right was....
1. rotavate the whole area, or dig and turn it over if you don't have a rotavator.
2. add enough sharp sand and very small grit to help break up the clay.
3. dig in loads of normal multipurpose compost until you have a nice 'bread crumb' like texture.
4. if you don't have a rotavator, have a nice long soak in a hot bath.
