  • had to steak my potato plants

    Good Morning All.

Am I being a bit too cautious, but on Sunday when we had those terrible winds, all my potato plants got bent to heaven, so in my wisdom or insanity I have decided to steak them up, has anyone done this before or am I just paranoid of them breaking? another week and I should be harvesting them.

    Hello Greenfingers

My potato haulms were to long, bending over and snaping. I trimed about a foot off them and left them untill harvest. The potatos that I've harvested since have been lovely.
Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

      Hi Tracey,

Thank you very much for the advice, think I will have a look at them tonight when I get home.

a lot of mine got battered at the weekend and most have broke.
All I have done is taken the broken tops off and put them in the composter.
I hope the pots wont be affected as I dont think they are ready yet.
My main crop ones were ok, it was just my first earlies.
        Will they continue to grow?

Mine were leaning a bit - wasn't sure if was the winds or if they were starting to fall back. I might just try giving a couple of the earlies a trim - they've been in since late february and are tiny (marble tiny). If it makes them bigger, i'll do the rest.

              Hi Greenfingers...

I wondered about this too. My haulms are 3' clear above the tubs - and are now snapping over in every direction. I'm tempted to stake them...altho' I don't hear of anyone doing this...or do they? I'd like to know if the integrity of the haulm has any bearing on the integrity of the potatoes -

              Cheers
