  • storing cucumbers

    Hello,
Anybody got any good ideas on how to store/keep cucumbers? I have too many coming to full size and cant eat then all at once.

Slicing them and storing in vinegar works quite well. Can't say for sure how long it works for though sorry.

I was watching a programme last year where somebody chopped them up and put them in an air tight jar with vinegar and water, apparently it keeps for a while. (I haven't tried it just yet).

Lucky you . But short of making soup or pickling them I don't think they can be stored. You can give them away for Brownie points.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I don't like pickled things much, but I like soup.

Here's hoping for a glut... Hm, now what would go nicely with cucumber in soup? I would think just a fairly plain potato-based soup with lots of cucumber, some onion and garlic, a few herbs - mint - coriander - serve it hot with a dollop of cold natural yoghurt floating on top - oh I can taste it already - and my plants haven't even got flowers yet!

I reckon you could also make some sort of green chutney with apples in, and maybe some green tomatoes and a bit of mustard or some zingy herbs for bite. Has to be nicer than just pickling the things on their own!
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

You could try leaving them on the plant for as long as you dare!
The greatness comes not when things go always good for you,but the greatness comes when you are really tested, when you take, some knocks, some disappointments;because only if youv'e been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.

                Thanks everyone,
I thought it would come down to either giving them away or leaving them on the plant.
I dont want to pickle them so I will go for a few brownie points and give some and leave some as long as possible on the plant. Trouble is they are quite large when fully grown and there is only my wife and myself at home. Maybe next year I will grow a smaller variety which will not take as long to consume.

if you wrap them tightly with cling film they will keep in the fridge for quite a while

The Poles pickle cucumbers and they use them to make soup - I think the cucumber to the Pole is like the beetroot to the Russian. I have had a pickled cucumber soup in a Polish restaurant and it was really super.

We did that last year but eventually they became pale and bitter.

Could you try staggering the sowing so you don't get a glut? Maybe we should do that next year? Isn't it funny that talking to someone else helps you sought your own dilemmas out?

We wrap ours in cling film and put them in the fridge.
They last about 10 days or so.
We eat a lot of salad so they soon get eaten.

We wrap ours in cling-film too, they really do keep a lot better/longer that way
