  • can I put bbq ash on the compost?

You know, from the briquettes / coals that I've used to cook my burgers?

i put bonfire ash either in the compost or straight in the soil if i have a patch to dig, and i've not killed anything yet lol, so i'm sure bbq ash will be ok too

Ash can be used as an alternative to lime and lime is often used to 'sweeten' the acidity of compost!
So the answer is YES........it will do nowt but good!

The brickettes are made from charcoal and the charcoal is made from wood!

Now I read somewhere that the briquettes are not suitable for compost because they contain more than just charcoal such as sodium nitrates, borax, and benzo(a)pyrene as well as giving off soot and carbon monoxide.

                    I didn't know that.

Theoretically then.................if its true, the borax will cure any boron defficiency, the charcoal will sweeten it and the soot will give it a nitrogen boost along with the sodium nitrate, the carbon monoxide is a gas and shouldn't be a problem and the benzo(a)pyrene (whatever that may be?) is probably the residue from the infused lighter fuel which should have been burned away with the heat that was generated.

I usually just use lump charcoal and light it with newspaper which should be ok,but if I did use brickettes I think I would still use the ash on the compost or fruit bushes

Each to there own I suppose!
